Ellen Kushner is a queer American writer whose second home is France. She and her wife, the writer Delia Sherman, live in New York City when they are not traveling elsewhere.
Her novels have been published in French translation in many editions, beginning with Thomas le Rimeur, winner of both the World fantasy & Mythopoeic Awards. It formed part of Pierre Dubois’ “Bibliotheque Féerique” at Editions Hoebeke, with an introduction by Claudine Glot. Subsequent editions by Folio SF and Editions ActuSF.
Her now classic queer novel Swordspoint (Calmann-Levy/Livre de Poche/Editions ActuSF), which George R.R. Martin calls “formidable, unforgettable,” was published in 2019 by Editions ActuSF in a special edition with an introduction by Stephanie Nicot. This edition contains connected short stories never before seen in French, plus original material written by Kushner specifically for the French volume, not available in any other language. Its sequel, The Privilege of the sword, was also translated by Patrick Marcel, as was her related story, Un jeune homme de mauvaise vie ( Fictions no 17), which won the Prix Imaginales de la meilleure nouvelle 2014.
